Volunteer Opportunities

Tools to help you find your next volunteer gig

Here are some websites that help people find volunteer opportunities with social change organizations.  These Volunteer Platforms provide profiles of organizations so you can learn more about them before you volunteer.

Global Volunteers

Global Volunteers is a good option for people who want to volunteer in a developing country.

  • Global Volunteers offers a platform for valuable involvement, cultural learning, and meaningful engagement, supporting diverse areas of positive change through skills, knowledge, and contributions.
  • These opportunities embody social responsibility and positive change, enabling direct contributions to social causes and community development.
  • They empower individuals to make a global impact by collaborating with communities and addressing issues.
  • Volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, employer/employee, college, and high school groups.
    • Global Volunteers also provides training and support for volunteers.
  • Volunteer locations: China, Cook Islands, Cuba, Ecuador, Greece, Italy, Nepal, Peru, Poland, Portugal, St Lucia, Tanzania, Vietnam, and in the USA: Montana, New Mexico, Puerto Rico, Texas
  • Volunteer opportunities include a wide range of impact areas, including refugee assistance, education, healthcare, community       development, empowerment, and more, such as:
    • Community Work Projects
    • Delivering Essential Services
    • Teaching Conversational English
    • Supporting Community Development
    • Supplementing School-Based Curricula
    • Examples: Refugee Assistance, Conversational English, Health Care Abroad, Summer        Camps And Enrichment, Building Repair and Painting, Childcare Projects Abroad, Parent Workshops, Tutoring And Classroom Teaching, Computer Literacy, Garden Boxes And Gardening, Nutrition Education, Health and Hygiene Education, Administration And Finance, Village Home Visits, Food Production, Senior Care, Literacy And Math Testing, Women’s Sewing/Knitting Cooperative, Professional Assistance, and Housing Assistance.

HandsOn Network

  • The HandsOn Network combined with the Points of Light Foundation in 2007 to create the Points of Light Institute, now known as Points of Light. (See below)
  • The HandsOn organization was a network of local volunteer centers across the United States. There are still several individual city organizations remaining.
  • They focus on local, community-based volunteer opportunities, some based on professional skillset.
  • The programs may differ a bit from location to location, but generally, these sites connect volunteers with non-profits to work on projects. They have an easy-to-use Volunteer Calendar      with search functionality.
  • Volunteer Now, Youth & Family Volunteering, Court-Ordered Volunteers, Military Volunteers, Days of Service, Volunteer from Home, Group Volunteering, Corporate Volunteering, and Do It Yourself Volunteering
  • Volunteer Lead positions (Ooo, that would look good on your resume), Help Behind the Scenes,
  • Pros: Volunteers can make a difference in their own community, at a time and place that is convenient to them, for causes that matter to them.
  • Cons: Limited locations. I identified what I      could find of the remaining individual volunteer centers.
  • Personal Note:
    • I do this one locally/remotely here in the Twin Cities, a couple of times a year, taking the roles as a project lead (my profession is rooted in project management). We have been doing them remotely, which is very efficient.
    • I LOVE it! It is so convenient, and at the end of the day, you have produced something! - SDB
